A guide for grown-ups

A calm bedtime story routine for 3 to 6 year olds

Twenty quiet minutes, in the same order every night. Here is a simple routine that works for most families with young children, and how to choose the stories.

Young children settle best when bedtime is predictable. They don't need it to be long or perfect, just familiar: the same few steps, in the same order, with a story as the reward at the end. Here's a plan you can adapt.

A 20-minute routine

  1. Wind down (5 minutes). Bath or wash, teeth, pyjamas. Lower the lights in the room you'll read in.
  2. Choose the story (1 minute). Offer two books, not the whole shelf. Choosing gives your child a little control, and two choices keep it quick.
  3. Read together (10 minutes). Sit close. Let your child turn the pages, point at things and ask questions; the conversation matters as much as the words.
  4. Talk for a moment (2 minutes). "What was your favourite part?" or "What do you think the little crab did next?" A short chat helps the story settle.
  5. Lights out. Say the same goodnight words every night. A familiar closing line is a clear signal that the day is done.

Choosing stories by age

Ages 3 to 4

Ages 5 to 6

"Again!" and "one more!"

Asking for the same book every night is normal, and it's useful: children notice new things on each read and start to say the words with you. Let the favourite stay. If "one more" turns into three more, agree the number before you start ("two books tonight") and keep to it kindly.

If you read on a screen

Many families keep bedtime for paper books, and that's a fine choice. If you use a tablet for some stories, a few habits keep it calm:

How Popfables fits

Popfables was made with bedtime in mind. Each book is six short pages, about right for one sitting. From 7 pm to 6 am Bedtime turns on by itself: softer, slower music, calm motion and a quiet finish. The storyteller can read aloud, or you can switch Read to me off and read it yourself while your child taps the pictures. The first book, The Moon's Little Lantern, is a free goodnight story about a sleepy moon. For the season, The Winter Wonders Set ends with a sleepy New Year's Eve story that finishes in bed, not at midnight.
